The Miao name Chiyou, the horned war-ancestor who stood against the Yellow Emperor, as the first of their bloodline. Tradition holds that where envy, rivalry, and the sensation of being watched gather, the ancestor's horn stands between the wearer and the wisher of ill.

For centuries, the Miao people invoked the Mountain King not for peace, but for war against the unseen. This carved mask, bound with silver and inscribed with cinnabar, serves as a domesticated fragment of that deity's original wrath. Miao Soul-Calling Bell

In Miao belief a person is not one soul but several, and fright, fever, or grief can send one wandering. The soul-caller stands at the open door at dusk, ringing silver and speaking the name. This bell—with its horn escort and cinnabar-written cloth scroll—miniaturizes that rite for those who came back from illness or sorrow feeling that not all of them returned.

What hunts you has a mouth. The Dongba answer was to carve a larger one.

In the Dongba religion of the Naxi people, protection is not a wall but an appetite: fierce guardian deities are invited to consume the misfortune circling a household. This amulet pairs a hand-carved wooden deity face with a micro-scroll written in Dongba script — the last pictographic writing system still alive in ritual use — for those whose nights and luck have both turned against them.
