Egypt wrote one word for life, and held it out to the living and the dead alike.

In every temple relief where a god extends something to a human being, the thing extended is the ankh: the looped cross Egypt wrote for the word life. Offered to the living as breath and to the dead as continuance, it is the least fearful symbol antiquity produced. This free-standing carved ankh is made in that tradition — a bedside and sickroom object for the depleted, and a steady answer to the fear of the door.
